What is Social Media Marketing?

When you think of the words “social media”, you may think of sites like Facebook or Twitter. You use them to post what you had to eat for lunch or tell your “friend” happy birthday when the app tells you to. But when it comes to using social media for marketing your business, it’s a different world.

So, what is social media marketing? In short, it’s using social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, to gain exposure or traffic to your website or landing page.

These are the “must have” sites that you should focus on when it comes to social media marketing:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Pinterest
  • Linkedin

There are others that you should look into as well, depending on your business, but I believe that every business should at least have the ones listed above.

Here are a few reasons that you need to use social media marketing for your business:

1) It helps you look like a legitimate business

Many people today may look at a company’s Facebook page (or whatever their favorite network is) before they even look for your website. If you don’t have a page on that network, they may not take you seriously.

It’s important to note that even though you have a page on the most popular social media networks, you need to actively post to all of them too. If you haven’t posted to the page in over a month, for example, they may quickly lose interest and go to your competitor who is consistently posting.

2) It gets you free (or cheap) traffic to your website

If you have a blog and share your posts to the different social media sites, there’s a chance that your followers will share your (hopefully) awesome content with their friends. In turn, their friends will share it with their friends, and their friends will share it with their friends. The more people that share, the more traffic you’ll get to your site.

Another option is to pay for ads on social media networks, paying for each time someone clicks the ad and is taken to your website. This brings you traffic for usually penny’s on the dollar (if the ad is well optimized).

3) It increases your brand recognition and exposure.

The more places you display your brand, the more exposure that you’ll get. That’s true for any type of marketing that you do.

With social media marketing, there’s a chance that someone may learn about your brand for the very first time, just because one of your posts shows up on their feed because their friend liked it.

When you like something on Facebook, for example, there’s a chance that the thing that you just liked will show in your friends feed, saying that you just liked it. This increases your exposure.

4) It improves your SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Search engines like Google are likely making social media as a significant ranking factor. Being active on social media could act as a “brand signal” to search engines that your brand is legitimate, credible, and trustworthy.

In short, the more “social signals” that you have, the better chance you have to rank higher in the search results. Obviously there are hundreds of other factors in play, but “social signals” is rumored to be one of the top things that they look at.

You can’t afford to ignore social media marketing. When it’s done right, it can easily lead to more customers, more traffic, and more conversions. It’s here to stay, and will only get more popular.
