What's The Difference Between On-Page and Off-Page SEO?

If you're new to the world of SEO, you may be wondering what the difference between "on-page" and "off-page" SEO is.

There's actually a clear difference

On-Page SEO

On-page SEO (or “on-site” SEO) is the act of optimizing different parts of your website that affect your search engine rankings.

On-page SEO focuses on things like:

  • Title Tags
  • Headings
  • URL Structure
  • Meta Descriptions
  • Image ALT Text
  • Page Loading Speed
  • Mobile Friendliness
  • Page Content
  • Internal Linking
  • Schema Markup

Off-Page SEO

Off-page SEO focuses on increasing the authority of your domain through the act of getting traffic from links from other websites.

Off-page SEO is done by doing things like:

  • Creating  great content that people want to share and link to
  • "Guest Post" on other blogs
  • Find "broken links"
  • Build public citations
  • Get articles from the press

Is On-Page SEO More Important than Off-Page SEO?

In my opinion, nowadays, on-page SEO is more important than off-page. I’ve proven this a few times by building a lot of organic traffic to pages on a site with no links (off-page SEO) done to it.

This wasn’t always the case though. There was a time where links where the most important ranking factor, but I believe with recent changes to algorithms, they have taken a back seat to on-page optimizations.
